One Fine Sunday Closing Reception a Success!

The BCAE just wrapped up its installation “One Fine Sunday in the Funny Pages.”  Curator John Read, publisher of Stay Tooned Magazine, had over 130 different syndicated comic strips and panels on display throughout the building for the month of May.

In true funny pages fashion, Sunday, May 29th, was the closing reception at the BCAE. Over 100 comic strip artists, in Boston for the Reuben Awards presented by the National Cartoonists Society, were in attendance to not only greet their fans, but mingle with each other. “It’s fun and refreshing to see everyone else’s strip for a change, I look at mine all the time,” said Bill Amend, the creator of the comic “Fox Trot.”

On hand for signing autographs was a veritable who’s who in the funny pages – Bill Keane of “Family Circus,” Don Wimmer of “Rose is Rose,”  and Brad Anderson of “Marmaduke” to name just a few.  Fans were delighted as they lined up to meet their childhood favorites and collect autographs.

The artists then broke off into the classrooms and created their own BCAE Gallery on all of the white boards.  It was a great experience for staff and guests to see them laughing and joking with each other through cartoon.

It was a once in a lifetime experience to have the chance to meet the artists we have all followed in the funny pages for years.  “To put a face to the characters I have cherished since I was a kid was something I will never forget,” shared BCAE Executive Director, Susie Brown.
