The BCAE Presents Chew on This 2015. Let the Countdown Begin!

The 4th annual BCAE fundraiser is 2 WEEKS AWAY, and we could not be more excited for you to join us. As you may know, we changed up the theme a little bit this year...moving from "What's Your Beef" 2012 and 2013, then to "Beyond Beef" last year, now to "Chew on This: Kicked Up Classics."

This year, we are STILL featuring 9 of Boston's finest and most highly renowned chefs that will be cooking and mingling with attendees come March 12th. What's the difference, then? What you will be eating may not be beef or even meat...it might be seafood or cheese or vegetables...but WARNING: may cause feelings of nostalgia.

We asked our 9 featured chefs about some of their favorite classic foods, and then we told them to pick one and kick it up...and we mean WAY up! This is not your average blue plate special nor is it your mother's meatloaf. What will it be? The only way to find out is to buy a ticket and join us on March 12th. Step back in time as the BCAE transforms into the diner of your foodie dreams.

Introducing a brand new series... Restaurant R&D

Restaurant R&DStarting in April, we are doing something we’ve never done before! We are inviting local restaurateurs into the BCAE kitchen for some research & development. Whether it be new menu testing or general concept revamping, chefs get to try out their fresh ideas with eager audiences, and diners get a early glimpse (and taste!) of the next thing to hit the Boston dining scene.

We are thrilled to announce that the first event in the series will feature our soon-to-be neighbor Liquid Art House, set to open later this spring.

On Thursday, April 10th, at 6:00 PM, Award-Winning Chef Rachel Klein and her team will take over the BCAE kitchen, giving attendees a sneak peek into the Liquid Art House menu and concept.

The evening will continue as the attendees go next door to the Liquid Art House itself for an exclusive private tour of the restaurant space and toast to the upcoming opening.

Re-Cap of Beyond Beef 2014: Food For Thought

Our 3rd annual fundraiser, newly named "Beyond Beef: Food for Thought" was a hit last Thursday, jam-packed with food, drinks, and a wide assortment of items up for auction.

The chef-prepared food items most certainly stole the show, with each chef expressing his or her creativity with a wide array of ingredients, and truly going "beyond beef."


Myers + Chang Duck Dumplings

Karen Akunowicz of Myers + Chang served juicy (we can attest to that) duck dumplings with ginger winter spices and duck broth.

Jason Bond of Bondir- Lady Apple

Jason Bond of Bondir went vegetarian, serving a lady apple filled with meyer lemon-tofu and garnished with Gilfeather Turnip Leaves, nicknamed Turfupple by Chef Bond himself.

Matthew Gaudet of West Bridge, Oyster Carbonara

Matthew Gaudet of  West Bridge prepared a twist on a classic, with a colorful "King Oyster Carbonara" served with pickled chestnut mushrooms.

Roxy's Grilled Cheese bodega bite

Jason DiSabatino, founder/owner of Roxy's Grilled Cheese went with a "Bodega Bite," Colt 45 braised chuck Flap on an Iggy's Pain De Mie with crispy leeks & funyun aioli, and (of course!) a shot of that famous tomato soup.

Michael Leviton bison short rib

Michael Leviton of Lumière & Area Four made a crowd favorite--braised bison short ribs with root vegetables and malted celery root-parsnip puree.

Sam Monsour's Bacon & Eggs

 #True28 Sam Monsour's "Bacon & Eggs" were anything but traditional...crispy pork belly with caraway, orange glass, bourbon barrel, and an espresso egg.

Kevin O'Donnell of The Salty Pig, lamb shoulder

Kevin O’Donnell of The Salty Pig could be seen carefully crafting each plate of lamb shoulder "in porchetta," with bagna cauda and sunchoke.

Michael Scelfo of Alden & Harlow artfully presented his smoked goat steaks, with buttermilk, pistachio, & kumquat.

Fresh Fruit Swirls, Dustin Rennells

BCAE resident instructor and Bad Boy Bake Shop baker Dustin Rennells wowed the sweet tooth in everyone with fresh fruit swirls in strawberry, kiwi, or blackberry with assorted shortbread accents.

Deep Eddy vodka

To wash it all down, we had Bully Boy cocktails crafted by Moksa’s Noon Inthasuwan-Summers, beer from Peak Organic, wine from 90+ Cellars, and fruity vodka mason jar cocktails from Deep Eddy.

BCAE's List: Top 5 Things To Do in Boston this Fall!

As the air starts to chill during these late August evenings and you realize summer is slipping away, don’t panic if you haven’t thought about what to do this autumn.   If you are looking for fun things to do in Boston, look no further.  The BCAE is brimming with sensational classes this fall.  Check out our top five:

1.  Skip the bar, and become the bartender!     

Feeling tired with the same old bar scene in Boston?  Learn to mix your own libations at a BCAE cocktail class.  On September 17th, join us for The Arrrrrrrt of the Cocktail: Fun with Rum.  Mixologist Domingo Martin Barres embraces his love of rum and International Talk Like a Pirate Day as he creates seaworthy cocktails like “Captain Jack,” “Walk the Plank,” and “Barbery Coast.” 

2.  Find a new place to eat.

Dying to try that hot chef’s new restaurant?  Taste the food and meet the chef with the BCAE’s Celebrity Chef series.  Each term, find 6 of Boston’s hottest chefs cooking at the BCAE kitchens.

3.  Try something new.

Take for $10 is back for the third year running.  If you haven’t already registered, you better move fast.  These classes offer you a preview of an instructor or sampling of a longer class for just $10.  So if you’ve been dying to learn the piano or test your hand a watercolor, check it off your list this September with Take for $10.

4.  Mix and mingle.

Boston can be a tough city to mingle in.  Get out of your comfort zone and meet some new people at a wine & cheese reception for new art gallery exhibition “Upscale: Boston Goes Big.”  Photographer (and BCAE instructor) Chris Padgett displays a new view of the city in these large scale photographs.  RSVP required!

5.  Ditch the gym!

CREATE: 6 Artists | 6 Chefs | 1 Canvas at the BCAE

This past Sunday, the BCAE joined Chef Louis DiBiccari (Chef Louie Night, Storyville) and GILT City for an eye-opening, palate teasing event that bridged the worlds of culinary and visual arts. Six up-and-coming chefs were challenged to create dishes based on the subject matter of six local artists.

Over 150 guests came for this multi-sensory celebration of food and art.  Each artist and chef pair were assigned a room where, they built an atmosphere, and ultimately, an experience through art and food.

Local rising artists, including, !ND!V!DUALS, Josh Falk, Emily Lombardo, Miracle 5 and Dana Woulfe joined forces with up-and-coming chefs such as, Jason Cheek of KO Prime, Suzi Maitland of Trina’s Starlite Lounge, Brandon Arms of Garden at the Cellar, Douglas Rodriguez of Clio, Marc Sheehan of Brasstacks and Steve Postal from the Red Sox to collaborate on dishes inspired by the artwork.

The result? Nothing short of a masterpiece.

Holy Cow!

Thanks to the support of the Boston restaurant community, our sponsors, and you – the BCAE successfully threw our first annual “What’s Your Beef” fundraiser on April 19th to a sold out crowd, and A-list chef attendance. With over 250 people in the building and 9 celebrity chefs sizzling beef – the event was a mouthwatering success.  In case you missed it, here were a few highlights to get you excited for next year:

* NECN’s Jenny Johnson commanding the live auction and reeling in over $2,000 for a private cooking class with Will Gilson along with a 4-course dinner at his highly anticipated new restaurant, bridgestreet.

* Over 400 shucked oysters to enjoy thanks to our friends at Island Creek Oysters

* Clear Channel Outdoor President, Steve Ross throwing in a last minute VIP Celtics ticket package in the middle of the live auction (did I mention he also put up 2 “What’s Your Beef?” billboards on 93 North and South? Yes, he is our favorite)

* English Bill’s fresh squeezed Beefeater punch (dangerously delicious!), Peak Organics own Rob Lucente serving up his finest brew and Vino di Vino keeping everyone’s wine glasses filled

* Over 500 hand cut cow hoofprints guiding guests to the various chef stations

* The BEST VIP bags ever (not to toot our own horn, but it’s true). A few of the items, you ask? How about Wusthof kitchen shears, Flippio Berio Olive Oil, Peak Organic pint glasses, Muir Glen Organic tomatoes…and that’s just naming a few. Not to mention, the incredible beef branded burlap bags all the treats came in!

What's Your Beef? BCAE Fundraiser Update

What's Your Beef
Spring is just around the corner and here at the BCAE we’re gearing up for our first annual “What’s Your Beef?” fundraiser. Nine of Boston’s premier chefs will be breaking down and serving up designated cuts of the highest quality local beef provided by John Crow Farm, Northeast Family Farms and Hardwick Beef. We can’t wait to see how Ming Tsai prepares loin and taste the Beefeater 24 cocktails mixed by “English Bill” Codman.

The night will directly support the BCAE and our tuition voucher program which offers free and discounted classes to our partnered social service agencies.  Through our tuition voucher program we are able to provide educational opportunities to those who need them most. You can make a difference by joining us for a fantastic night of raising forks and funds!
